Rick was influential in the restructuring of the Institute for Central American Studies in Costa Rica in 1988. As Director of Experiential Learning he provided leadership in the creation of study abroad programming, the Mesoamerica Language Program, the Department of Responsible Tourism, and continuing education for teachers. Rick was involved in the development of ecotourism policies for Costa Rica and has served as a group leader for a wide variety of visitors. 

Rick tuvo mucha influencia en la reestructuración del Instituto de Estudios Centroamericanos en 1988. Como Director de Aprendizaje por Experiencia el demostró liderazgo en la creación de programas de estudios internacionales, el Programa de Idiomas Mesoamerica, el Departamento de Turismo Responsable, y educación continua para profesores. Rick también participó en la formulación de políticas para el desarrollo del ecoturismo en Costa Rica y ha liderado una variedad de grupos que ha visitado el pais.
