The Buena Vista Equestrian Community is located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, 45 minutes north of the Liberia Airport. Surrounded by national parks, with views of the Pacific Ocean, the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano and other spectacular scenery, this region has tremendous potential. Three spas with natural hot springs, a five-star mountain resort, one of the country's best run ecotourism operations and incredible natural beauty attract visitors and savvy investors. Disclaimer: after residing in Costa Rica more than 20 years and operating several businesses and programs, in 2000 I purchased over 75 acres in the region and have experienced greater than a 400% increase in value! I'm more than happy to show you around...

Local Ranches

The Colibrí Ranch is my family's ranch; we Holland's moved to Costa Rica from California in 1972. After operating the Finca Colibrí almost 15 years just outside of San Jose, in 2000 we decided to sell and I purchased the ranch from the owners of the Buena Vista Lodge.

The Ocampo family is one of the area's original settlers and cattle ranchers, and several family members have been local leaders and politicians. Although still in the cattle business, family members led the transition from ranching to tourism, beginning with the Buena Vista Lodge, and more recently with the Canyon de la Vieja Lodge and the Tizate Spa.

Having left Cuba after the revolution, and a veteran of the Bay of Pigs, Adolfo Jimenez acquired land to become a large dairy farmer at the Borinquen Ranch. He and his family also converted a portion of their ranch to a tourism operation, developing the Borinquen Resort into one of the country's few 5-star mountain resorts.

The Castillo family have been cattle ranchers for decades and decided to sell their ranch to a group of investors who are developing The Rincon. This project aims to be a vibrant, sustainable, international community that supports human flourishing through a focus on wellness, personal and social development, and connections with nature and the arts.

A group of Costa Rican investors purchased a piece of property from the Ocampo's bordering our ranch and are developing the San Roque Ranch, with the intention of developing a gated rural community.

Similar to my family, the Menkings settled in Costa Rica in the early '70s from Texas. After establishing one of the first sportfishing operations on the Pacific Coast, the family began acquiring land in Buena Vista and operating a large cow/calf operation at Las Imagenes Ranch. After years of planning, in 2011 Las Imagenes has opened an equestrian center, specializing in the breeding and training of Quarter Horses.

The above ranches and other neighbors constitute over 20,000 acres (8,000 Ha) of ranchlands and forests, and we are surrounded by the Guanacaste Conservation Area, consisting of more than 275,000 acres (110,000 Ha). Habitats vary from cloud forest to dry forest, and we look out on the Gulf of Papagayo on the Pacific Coast.

My real estate career began in 1984 when I first identified investment properties in Costa Rica. I obtained my California Real Estate License in 2002 and worked as an agent with Century 21 in Santa Cruz. The past several years I have specialized in investment and vacation properties in Costa Rica as owner/operator of Colibri S.A., and in 2010 began working with Bradley Real Estate in Marin County, California.
